CIHA Nutrition Department to kick off next “What Can I Eat” lunch & learn series September 4th

“What Can I Eat? Healthy Choices for American Indians and Alaska Natives with Type 2 Diabetes” is a diabetes nutrition education program for Native adults with pre-diabetes and/or diabetes. The goal of the program is to help people learn about healthy eating with diabetes through a comprehensive curriculum provided by the Cherokee Indian Hospital Nutrition Department.

The next session begins September 4 and will be held from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the Welch Top Conference Room, located across from Physical Therapy at the Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority. The class is offered in an in-person format for 90 minutes during lunch.

There are 5 sessions covering topics on healthy nutrition and diabetes, physical activity, and ways to make healthy food choices. The program provides a supportive and safe environment for participants to learn how people with diabetes can eat in a healthy way and help them feel more confident in making healthy food choices both at home and away from home.

In each class, participants will learn about healthy eating, participate in group discussions, engage in hands-on activities, practice physical activity, and learn a mindful nutrition choice activity. The first 4 classes take place once a week for 4 weeks. The 5th class is a reunion and celebration, held two months after the 4th class.

The purpose of the program is to answer the question many people with diabetes have: “What can I eat?” Patients are welcome to bring a support person to each class. Prizes are provided to participants, and lunch is served free of charge. It is recommended that participants attend all classes to achieve the best results in making diet and lifestyle changes.
